Huawei Nova: an evolution through the years

Huawei Nova

The Huawei Nova series, a mid-range array of smartphones progressing to the level of high-end, has been a favorite of all Huawei customers. The series derives its name from the Latin word, denoting “new” and in astronomy, an exploding star. The Nova series has evolved immeasurably through the years as a trusted brand for the youth. At the time of its flagship launch, the demand for mid-range smartphones was at its highest and smartphone manufacturers were attempting their very best to make these devices better and better. The Huawei Nova series was introduced as a series of typical mid-range smartphones, offering a premium build quality and decent hardware. Over time, Huawei Nova series established its presence as a world-renowned and reliable brand. With 100 Million global users and over 150,000 Sri Lankan Nova users, it is evident that the brand has benchmarked the standards of all smartphones. Huawei launched the Huawei Nova 2i upper mid range smartphone to much anticipation in early November 2017, receiving high acclaims from the public.

This was the flagship smartphone of the Nova series to be introduced to consumers. The Nova 2i sports Huawei’s first-ever quad cameras comprising 13MP and 2 MP front-facing dual cameras with smart ambient flash technology and 16MP plus 2MP dual rear cameras enhancing vibrancy in one’s photos and videos captured. Huawei Nova 2i’s front facing dual camera uses the power of amazing lenses and cutting-edge camera technology to achieve a breathtaking bokeh effect, better lighting and radiant portraits. Huawei’s amazing cutting edge camera technology allows the capture first and focus later feature, resulting in better composition and memories.

The design of the Nova series is used sand-blasted aluminum and slightly rounded backs, allowing them to nestle neatly in user's palm. Following the launch of the Nova 2i, Huawei unveiled the next surprise to all consumers: the Nova 3 and Nova 3i. Made to empower users to experience a fuller life, the two smartphones, Nova 3 and 3i feature an AI quad-camera setup which is a first for Huawei. Both Huawei Nova3 and Huawei Nova3i house dual front facing cameras with a 24MP primary camera and 2MP secondary camera. The former captures photos and videos with vivid clarity, whereas the secondary camera takes care of the depth data. The two sensors work in concert to focus on the subject and captures images with a field of vision that is similar to the human eye, resulting in truly immersive photos. Huawei nova3i includes the new HiSilicon Kirin 710 SoC and a 3340mAh battery, while the Nova 3 is powered by a HiSilicon Kirin 970 SoC and a 3750mAh battery. Both the handsets come with 19.5:9 displays and notch-based designs. The rear camera on the HUAWEI Nova 3 comprises a 24MP monochrome and 16MP RGB sensor with dual f/1.8 wide aperture 6p lenses. Combined, they allow the device to not just capture crisp images even in dark or low-light environments, but also provide greater control over the photos. HUAWEI Nova 3i houses powerful rear cameras which combines a 16MP primary sensor and a 2MP secondary sensor.

The former captures vivid images and videos, while the latter records depth data to create a professional bokeh effect, resulting in more natural- looking images. Nova 4 was officially launched on 17 th December internationally, brightening up the seasonal joy with striking revolutionary features of the new device. Based on the first reviews by the media and blogs, the reveal has stunned the industry.

Touting its revolutionary under-display camera technology, Huawei Nova 4 has pushed the limit of bezel-less design with its tiny selfie camera that takes up less space as ever on the screen. In addition, Nova 4 demonstrates an increased screen ratio for display. The screen-to-body ratio of 86.3% has apparently not taken away the feature performance of the camera, which offers 25MP lens with AI beautification features.

Another striking feature of the device is presented as the Triple rear camera with ultra-wide angle feature. In its official Weibo account, HUAWEI has focused on its ultra-wide angle feature, combining the 48MP+16MP+2MP triple rear cameras into a sophisticated smart photography device that allows for an image capture that stretches across 117 degrees. The lower range of Nova offers a slightly lower feature with 20MP+16MP+2MP rear cameras, but the ultra-wide photography feature is likely enough to excite any photography enthusiasts. In 2018, HUAWEI was ranked 47 on BrandZ’sTop 100 Most Valuable Global Brands, number 79 in Forbes World’s Most Valuable Brands and number 25 on the Brand Finance Global 500 Most Valuable Brands lists.
