Shopping in Colombo
Gone are the times when we thought of going shopping during a festive season or for an occasion and had to take time to sit and think prior to leaving the house. A few years back the choices and the range of products were limited. As Sri Lanka slowly but steadily develops and the landscape changes we seem to attract a lot of global brands to our shores. We even have rising local brands that are going global.
Shopping is a full day family activity considering the time it takes to maneuver the traffic on the road and the limited parking on the road. The shopping malls nowadays are also aware of this factor and are making it a more family experience providing kids activity stations, movie theatres, and food courts which are a big part of family shopping. Local and global cuisine is now an important part of shopping malls.
If we consider the rounded experience we are looking for and look at the options nowadays we have quite a considerable number of options in and around Colombo!
One Galle Face Mall
Located next to Shangri-La Colombo, it has a range of international brands and local brand outlets. Many banks are located within the premises. It has a large food court and movie theatres. Currently a go to location as its new and the ambiance is pleasing.
Colombo City Centre
A recent addition to the Colombo shopping list operational for about two years. When comparing to the number of shops within the premises with One Galle Face, it is on the lesser side, yet it too has international and local brands’ outlets, a kids area, movie theatres and a large food court with a balcony view as well if you like to see the sunset.
Located in Colombo 03, Marino mall offers exciting new virtual reality gaming experiences to both young and old with a 9D cinema. Although the range of shops are limited compared to CCC or One Galle Face mall and a fairly small food court families can spend a few hours enjoying the unique experience here.
Located adjoining Cinnamon Grand Hotel, Crescat is a go to place for the office workers and tourists occupying the hotels and high-rise apartment dwellers around Colombo 03 and Galle face area. Although it is a fairly old mall it is still well maintained with a food court, supermarket and key local brands for a quick shopping experience.
Relatively new shopping complex compared to Majestic City and Liberty Plaza, it has a range of international and local shopping outlets. Might not be the shopping complex to spend a whole day at as it lacks the entertainment side such as movie theatres but it has a food court and a large area if you like to take stroll and relax.
The famous shopping mall for so many years in Colombo. It houses many shops but not an extensive range of international brands within. It has something for everyone. It too has a food court and a movie theatre within and has few other shopping complexes around it.
One of the long-standing shopping complexes similar to Majestic City. It too has many outlets, the classic building predominantly houses many mobile phone shops where as the extended building has many international brands and sports brand outlets. There are many shops selling phones, tabs and other communication devices so the range is extensive and the competition makes its beneficial for the customer as you will be able to get better deals within the premises. It too has ample parking.
The above suits the category of convenience shopping whereas the other shopping areas in Colombo may not be suitable for all. Colombo has many shopping areas but they do not fall under one roof similar to the places mentioned above.
There are a few more projects in the pipeline when it comes to shopping complexes such as, the ODEL shopping mall and the ITC shopping mall to name a few. If you are an avid shopper there are exciting times to look forward to as the skyline of Colombo brims with development and infrastructure changes.
